How Early Should You Start Planning a Destination Wedding in Italy?

Planning a destination wedding in Italy with time to make the right choices

One of the questions I’m asked most often is:

“How early should we start planning?”

For a couple living abroad, my answer is generally: about 18 months before the wedding.

Not because it takes eighteen months to plan a wedding in Italy.

But because starting early gives you one very important thing:

more choices.

Eighteen months: a great balance

The most sought-after venues, especially on certain Saturdays between May and September, can be booked well in advance.

The same is true for some photographers, musicians, and other wedding professionals.

If you have a specific date, a particular region, or perhaps already have a venue you love, having more time becomes even more important.

But eighteen months also allows you to plan calmly, without turning every decision into something urgent.

Because starting early doesn’t mean deciding everything right away.

Your first decisions should protect the things that matter most to you: the date, the venue, perhaps the ceremony, and the vendors who are particularly important to you.

Everything else can come gradually.

Having more time should take pressure away, not create more of it.

What about two years before?

Earlier isn’t necessarily better.

Starting two years in advance may sound even safer, but some venues and vendors may not yet have set their rates or officially opened their availability for that season.

So you may simply find that you’re too early.

Of course, you can start figuring out what you want, doing your research, defining your budget, and exploring different possibilities.

But that doesn’t mean you’ll already be able to book everything.

And if you have less time?

It doesn’t necessarily mean you’re too late.

In my experience, I’ve planned destination weddings with very different timelines: from around four months to a year, eighteen months, or longer.

The difference isn’t necessarily in the quality of the wedding.

It’s mainly in the number of options we have available at the beginning.

With four or six months, we’ll probably need to make some decisions more quickly and be more flexible about dates, venues, or certain vendors.

With eighteen months, we can generally work with much more freedom of choice.

And that’s exactly why I don’t believe in presenting planning timelines as absolute rules.

So, when should you start?

If you’re planning a destination wedding in Italy from abroad, about 18 months before the wedding is, in my experience, a great time to begin.

If you have less time, it doesn’t mean you can’t plan a wonderful wedding.

If you have much more time, it doesn’t necessarily mean you can already book everything.

You don’t need to start early just to fill in a checklist.

You start early enough to be able to say:

“This is what we want.”

And also:

“No, this isn’t for us.”

Because the real luxury of having time isn’t doing everything earlier.

It’s having the freedom to choose.
